Hi! My name is…
Hello and welcome to my little corner of the interwebs, I shall be calling: Slightly Nerdish. I just started building here, so it’s a little sparse at the moment and I’m an extremely indecisive person so there might be a few changes along the way, but grab a drink from the fridge and make yourself comfortable.
So, right about now you’re probably asking yourself, “What am I doing here and how did I get here?” Well the answer to your second question is, you clicked on the link and were transported here by the magic of the internet. As for the what part…you’re here to learn a little about me and the type of blog you’ll be reading. Consider this an introduction. “Hi, my name is Jared, it’s a pleasure to meet you and thank you for spending some time here.”
First a little about me. I’m your extremely average nerd next door. I’m not a risk taker, I’m a worrier, I have self-confidence issues and I use “lol” way, way too often in texts. Writing this blog already has me out of my comfort zone because I’m not a writer (I apologize for all the grammar mistakes that will happen) and I’m putting myself out there. Seriously, scary stuff. Whether this blog is around for 1 or 1000…episodes…issues…what is the correct term for this? Let me know if you know. Psssttt…I’m @NerdishJ on the Twitter. Anyways, no matter how long it lasts for, I will consider this a success. Since I’m stepping out of my comfort zone. Hmmm…sounds like a potential topic for later on.
This next little bit may be a deal breaker if you choose to read on. Here it is: I’m the type of person that clicks on those stupid clickbait lines of, “You won’t believe what the cast of Saved by the Bell looks like 20 years later.” Seriously, I’m addicted to those and I don’t know why. Whew, it feels good to get that off the chest. Please, don’t let it ruin this relationship.
Good, you’re still here, I knew we would be friends. I consider myself to be a nerdish person (hence my Twitter handle). What exactly is being nerdish? To me a nerdish person is someone who has one or two main fandoms (Star Wars / Game of Thrones), along with many fandoms that they have interest in, but don’t get into heavily (TMNT / Star Trek). This also includes a lot of fandoms that one should probably be interested in but have never gotten into (Dr. Who). Plus, interests outside of the nerd culture (baseball / music). Could I have used more parentheses?
A quick side note, Star Wars is by far my numero uno fandom. I have been a fan as long as I can remember. I have boxes and boxes of the Star Wars toys that I had when I was kid, which makes my wife shake her head at me sometimes. Hey, she has her horses and I have my Star Wars. My favorite movie to this day is Return of the Jedi. It brings back “all the feels” when I watch it.
With Game of Thrones, I started with the books. I read the first book four years ago and was captured by the land of Westeros. Whoa, Westeros is actually in the Word dictionary, my mind is officially blown. Then I saw the TV show and was amazed at how well they captured the book. It is one of the fandoms that in my opinion is excellent in both book and video format.
So what will you be getting by reading these words of mine? Well, as I’m not the type that is great at making deep connections and insights to the material I am watching or reading, you won’t be getting in-depth reviews and insights into Star Wars and other nerd related culture. Plus, there are plenty of other blogs, that are dressed up in a suit and tie that will do that 10 times better than I can. This is more a shorts and shirt type blog. You will be getting how my life intersects with different aspects of being a fan and how I deal with issues that affect most nerdish people. There will also be non-geek related topics such as baseball, music and family, along with more serious topics sprinkled in.
You should see a new blog every month or so. With the possibility of some mini-blogs tying into subjects that are talked about on the many different podcasts I listen to.
The TL;DR version: This will be a blog focused mostly on different aspects and fandoms in the nerd/geek life, along with some more personal musings that touch the life of this ordinary nerd.
Before we part ways, I want to give a shout out to a few people who gave me encouragement to do this. As always, my lovely wife for putting up with all of my craziness. Check out the rest below and click on their names to go to their Twitter page and give them a follow.
- Zachary Didur: Check out his wonderful book reviews on the RandomChatter Network.
- Sean Moore: Amazing blogger of all things Star Wars
- Jeff McGee: Excellent podcaster and blogger of Star Wars, toys, the 80’s and geek culture.
